Alison Hartrum, online business coach for female entrepreneurs, holding a book, sitting on a rock, water in the background.

In studying successful individuals, I realized that they all read — a lot. I already enjoyed leisurely reading, but I was less excited to dive into those “self-help books.” That’s when I was introduced to Audible; one of several apps that have proved to be life-changing for me. I no longer had an excuse that I couldn’t find the time to sit down and read. I started playing Audible books while getting ready in the morning, driving, and even sometimes while working out. Introducing these books into my world elevated my career, and the careers of those around me. Additionally, my personal life also began to flourish. At some point, I’d love to start an online book club, but for now, I’ll simply recommend a few of my favorites!

Everything changed with a few good books. Scroll down to view them all!

Prioritizing My Reading!

Reading was off to a slow start for me this year. I’ve been so busy that I just haven’t made the time to do my reading, though I know how valuable it is, and how worth the time investment! I was so behind that ended up canceling my Audible subscription so that I could get caught up with what I already had downloaded.

Then someone I follow on IG (Laura Carney, mindingmyfreq) shared a story in which she related reading The Book of Two Ways by Jodi Picoult. Picoult is one of my favorite authors, and I just happen to have that book sitting in my library waiting to be read, so that’s my book for the month of June!

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • From the author of Small Great Things and A Spark of Light comes a “powerful” (The Washington Post) novel about the choices that alter the course of our lives.

NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY MARIE CLAIRE

Everything changes in a single moment for Dawn Edelstein. She’s on a plane when the flight attendant makes an announcement: Prepare for a crash landing. She braces herself as thoughts flash through her mind. The shocking thing is, the thoughts are not of her husband but of a man she last saw fifteen years ago: Wyatt Armstrong.

Dawn, miraculously, survives the crash, but so do all the doubts that have suddenly been raised. She has led a good life. Back in Boston, there is her husband, Brian, their beloved daughter, and her work as a death doula, in which she helps ease the transition between life and death for her clients.

But somewhere in Egypt is Wyatt Armstrong, who works as an archaeologist unearthing ancient burial sites, a career Dawn once studied for but was forced to abandon when life suddenly intervened. And now, when it seems that fate is offering her second chances, she is not as sure of the choice she once made.

After the crash landing, the airline ensures that the survivors are seen by a doctor, then offers transportation to wherever they want to go. The obvious destination is to fly home, but she could take another path: return to the archaeological site she left years before, reconnect with Wyatt and their unresolved history, and maybe even complete her research on The Book of Two Ways—the first known map of the afterlife.

As the story unfolds, Dawn’s two possible futures unspool side by side, as do the secrets and doubts long buried with them. Dawn must confront the questions she’s never truly asked: What does a life well lived look like? When we leave this earth, what do we leave behind? Do we make choices . . . or do our choices make us? And who would you be if you hadn’t turned out to be the person you are right now?

In no particular order, here are some of the books that changed my life!

This was my first introduction to the power of positivity and the law of attraction. I am forever grateful to the woman who lent me this (hardcover) book while I was still in my teens.

I’m recommending this in paperback format because I found myself highlighting a LOT. This book is full of gold nuggets for anyone working in sales. In fact, when I led a book club for our sales office, this was one of our favorite reads!

I have Jen Sincero to thank for my “new life.” Seriously. I listened to this book 2-3 times (laughing every time!) before I decided that she was speaking directly to me, and it was time for me to do the unthinkable, quit my secure six-figure corporate job, and fulfil my dream of traveling the world. Now, I find myself randomly turning this Audible on in times of need — when I’m facing a fear, struggling with a particular relationship, or I just need a good ol’ dose of Jen.

Written and read by the creator and executive producer of Grey’s Anatomy, Private Practice, and Scandal. This book is a joy to listen to. Shonda Rhimes taught me how to reframe my thinking and start saying yes — to everything.
